The city will host the annual Arkansas High Country Race in 2020 and 2021.
The race combines backpacking with cycling through rugged terrain with minimalist camping for a 1,000-mile endurance competition. It is scheduled to start at the Experience Fayetteville Visitors Center on the downtown square on the morning of June 6.
Local cyclists will be allowed to ride with the racers as they make their way out of town along the Razorback Regional Greenway.
The race will follow the perimeter of the Arkansas High Country Route. The cyclists will travel east through the Ozark Mountains to the Buffalo National River corridor. Then the competitors will head south to the Arkansas River Valley and west to the Ouachita Mountains, a route which features sizable climbs and roller-coaster ridges. They will head back north through the Ozark Mountains to a finish line in Fayetteville.
